Is it best to have tyre pressure at the maximum limit?

Re: Calling Brompton riders
I have Marathons on mine. If I let the pressures go too low, it shows up as a "draggy" feeling when pedalling - as if the bottom bracket or wheel bearings aren't spinning freely! Problem soon goes away by pumping the tyre up with the pump supplied, until I can "only just" squeeze the side of the tyres between thumb and forefinger. Yup, I know that (somewhere) Schwalbe say you can't check the tyres on the marathons this way, but it works for me on the Brommie and my tourer. Using a tyre gauge seems to lose me about 10lbs of pressure so I tend to not bother.
