Most if not all yachtsmen have insurance.

But its still a blow for him. One always has to condider the safety of rescuers. I have been in situations at sea when you have to rescue someone who puts themself at risk and the rescuers too.

I think we was getting a bit close to an oil rig. And from personal experience they get rather "concerned" about that. Several years ago we went into "the exclusion zone" and they quickly got their rib out and came out to politely remind us about their zone (and we were fully under control). So decided at the next rig to test if the last lot were just being fussy/bored ... and they were not.

Considering his age, I wouldn't be altogether surprised if the premiums may have been prohibitive...
