My Garmin Montana connects with my Temp unit and I can see the temperature to the nearest DegC.

When I've been on tour with lots of kit, I find that when the day gets to 17degC it is the time that I'll take my LS top off and put on a SS top.

The temp outside at this moment here is 13degC and I reckon I would wear shorts if going out on my bike now, though if I went out earlier (cooler), I'd have put on my longs ................ I'd still be in a LS top though.

BTW, not cycling today. Just been doing some chainsawing and having a cuppa now. Back up into the woods shortly.

I've only just re-read this. I don't know any old wives who ride bikes, so I can't ask them. Not wanting to contradict your source of information, but it doesn't agree with either my sources of information or my own experiences after rides in cold/freezing conditions when I've not had my legs/knees covered properly. I've always regretted it, sometimes for days afterwards.

Who's interested in old wives' knees anyway?..............dancing girls' knees are a different matter :D :D :D

I've never worn shorts - it's not so much about feeling the cold, it's just that I don't get uncomfortable with heat on my legs ( though I do feel it top half of the body, even when it's quite cool outside). I don't feel 'comfortable' in shorts, as I don't in lycra either. I do have arthritis in my knees though (not yet diagnosed but it came on after a year or so of audible 'crisp-packet-rustling' sound coming from my knees - awaiting results of scan now).

I never wear shorts on a bike, I think I just look like a fat bloke on a bike.
I have longs for summer, windproof longs, when it is a bit chilly, windproof bib longs when it is cold, and if it is really cold I wear shorts underneath my bib longs.
My mate wears shorts on and offf the bike year round. It is a bit of an in joke , someone will say "it must be cold, he's wearing his winter shorts" Though I have seen him in long winter salopettes in the mountains in the snow.
If it aint broke, fix it til it is.

Hi,
I think its all about your own tolerance to the cold and at what temp.
Been discussed many times before,
I am one of the lucky ones who is not affected above 5C, but I do remember coming home one day as it cooled off and the last few miles I could not feel anything below my waist, just numb.

But If I do not move around much at home I will go cold at about 17C sitting in the lounge, getting old probably.
When I say tolerance its the pain in the joints which is a condition, I did experience that one day earlier in the year for first mile downhill, so I can sympathise.

I wear sandals and shorts all year off the bike unless its snowing or windchill is bad, I am only human. :)

Psamathe wrote:And how effective is a thin layer of tight lycra anyway ?

In my case it will always be roubaix (slightly fleecy inside) material over my knees - my knee warmers, 3/4 & full length tights are all like that. I think I have some lycra unpadded full length tights in a box somewhere that I have used in the past over shorts but they haven't been used in a good few years. At about minus 4 or so I start wearing the knee warmers under the full length tights & sometimes add hiking gaiters, particularly if it is snowy.

So, unless I throw caution to the wind & let them out while on the bike (about twice this year I think), my knees are always toasty warm.

Had shorts on yesterday on my 13 mile commute at 4:45am and it was -2 Deg C

Had a thermal Gore jersey and good gloves on and didn't feel cold one bit, strange as I don't normally like the cold but there was no wind chil for a change...

Shorts firmly packed away today. A very bright but chilly 11C and really the first flush of what I'd call winter.
At least it's dry!

With today's chilly breeze the autumn tights were rapidly pulled out of storage and into service.....

Hi,
37 miles this morning 5 C so still shorts weather, fingerless gloves but shoe covers and wind top till the sun came around, knees warm on first hill. sleeveless top all the way home still only 9 C .

But in the garden had to remove my overalls as I was too hot, in the shelter behind something it still feels warm in the sun which is good, it cant last.

Garmin said temperature of 6c when I got home last night but after a 10 mile ride I wasn't cold in shorts and short sleeve jersey.

I'm in longs for the duration now. Just bought some new ones, first new ones in maybe ten years!

It's not just temperature. Wind chill is different depending on the dampness level. Yesterday and the day before, for instance, I went down over the river and up through all the trees on the Devon side. It is damned chilly there in the mornings despite the temp being the same as it was when I left home.

River valleys, of which we have a few steep-sided ones round here, are terrible for wind chill.
