Using an Ipad for GPS on a bike

Post by John Mouatt »

Does anyone out there know how I can use my ipad as a GPS on my cycle and what downloads I can get to facilitate this.

I would like to be able to have OS maps on the ipad
I would like to be able to plot rides on the ipad at home
I would like to be able to follow the route on the ipad as we are doing the ride

If anyone has any simple ( easy to follow) tips, I will be very grateful.

I use on my iPhone on the move.
Maps GB250K
Routing and creating a gpx file EasyRoute needs data connection.
Following that route :MapOut

I think EasyRoute is about 79p the others are free.

How do you fit an IPad in your pocket?

iPad would be rather impractical to take on a bike ride just due to it's size. Unless you're putting it in a pannier or something.

iPad mini would be OK and you may be able to fit it in a bar bag map flap. At least you'd be able to see the maps!

Does your iPad have a GPS built-in ? (They don't all).

Interesting. Does it derive its location from the wifi connection then?

The GPS and cellular functionality are on the same chip. WiFi not used by GPS (but location services can use WiFi). But for regular GPS use it's the GPS on the cellular chip you need.
