ok, does anyone know whether the masks you get in builders mercahnts are any good for the london commute?

Apparently the proper masks only keep out the bit stuff anyway- (which is better than none at all)

I'm sure someone has posted on thsi already, but i can't find it,
THanks, pb

We recently had a dust mask course by 3M and the basic cheapo mask usually got from DIY shops and such like were useless for any keeping anything out but bricks. the test powder that was used went straight through them.
I’m not an expert on the subject but I think you need something that is up to about EN149:2001 standard.
We use 3M masks type 8822
cheers
J

I tried a respo nightmask the other day, but had to pull over ten minutes later because I couldn't breath. Supposedly their "techno" mask has higher ventillation, and you can upgrade through them, but so far so bad unfortunately.

Have a look at www.welconstruct.co.uk. They do a range of EN149 2001 masks & will take orders over the phone.

Masks: bit of a specialised topic, lots to choose from depending what you want.

Basic DIY masks tend to be that: basic. For softwood dust only.

Choice of mask (or "RPE") is entirely down to task, if you really want to keep nasties out, either have a shufty on the HSE website for their excellent (but very detailed) guidance or get a commercial health & safety catalogue.

I work in the Asbestos field, and part of my job is ensuring my guys have correct RPE. A really important thing often overlooked is how well a mask fits. If is doesn't fit properly, it won't keep pollutants out, however good the mask is. Which means you must be properly clean-shaven for a start. Then there's the methods of how to don and check a mask (disposable or otherwise)...

Unless you really want to get into cartridges for PM10s vs organics, and resistance to breathing for the combination you choose, I'd suggest you stick to cycling specific products like the "respro" range. If nothing else, their "bandit" design should keep the muck from road-spray off!
