+1 For Cyclists

Post by sapperadam »

This is my first time posting here but been reading this forum a lot and thought my first post should be about the good news I got today.

I had a physical MOT at the doctors due to family history of a number of issues, my brother went on statins at 29! Doctor checks my cholesterol and plugs it in to his risk calculator. He was suitably pleased and said that my risk level of a heart attack is the "lowest I've seen in my career", and he wasn't exactly a young doctor either.

I am putting this low risk entirely down to cycling, I was fit in my younger years but knee injuries kept me from running and general fitness and I started seriously cycling a few years back. My cholesterol levels are about as low as they can be, and I don't have a special diet, blood pressure is "perfect", and bmi is on the higher side of normal, exactly where I want it to be whereas when I took up cycling my bmi had nearly hit obese levels.

So upshot is I now have proof, if i really needed it, that cycling is definitely good for me. However, my OH said "Great, we're not going to lose you anytime soon which is good, but that doesn't stop you from being run over by an idiot". Got to love her optimism...

Or, you just got a lucky roll of the genetic dice. ;-) Not enough evidence for "proof" alas.

I'm not sure that forums are good for anyone's health, but welcome to this one anyway. :D
