519 miles in one go?
519 miles in one go?
Sod that. I see Mark Beaumont has completed the 'North Coast 500' in Scotland 38 hours non stop.

Non-stop?
I rode 50miles non-stop once. My wheels never stopped turning, but I was lucky with junctions and traffic lights.
I did 45miles today but stopped twice. Once for a call of nature
, and once for a breather before climbing a pig of a hill.

Like most audax cyclists, I've done over 250 miles in 24 hours, and could have done more. But not that much more.
Re: 519 miles in one go?
.............. but not non-stop.
I cannot believe anyone can ride over 500miles non-stop, especially on British roads.

I imagine the "non-stop" means not stopping for sleep, rather than not putting a foot on the ground anywhere. There must have been toilet stops, meal breaks and so on.

A fantastic achievement but I can't believe he totally enjoyed it , best go back now take his time and actually see some of the countryside.

Chris Boardman summed this up a while ago - after winning a Tour de France Prologue as I recall. He said words to the effect of "people misuse the words "enjoyment" and "satisfaction". No-one could enjoy what I've just been through, but it was immensely satisfying".
Re: 519 miles in one go?
24 hour time trialists do over 500 miles non-stop. They have their food and drinks handed up to them. Some may stop for pee breaks but some have perfected the art of peeing whilst riding along, so could truly ride non-stop. TT courses are designed so that you don't have to stop (roundabouts and left turns and no traffic lights). You can usually time your arrival at junctions so that you don't have to stop.

As cyclists we ought to realise people get their enjoyment in different ways, most people won't understand there's any pleasure in cycling at all. There's plenty of activities I wouldn't get any enjoyment from, football, golf, fishing, running, but I don't question anyone who does.
