I think some bearing designs do generate a small reaction load against the roller carrier. In others they use near-axial not-quite cylindrical rollers and a low preload. The scuffing is minimal anyway (because the roller inclination is much less) and again the system works OK with minimal preload (or even a slight clearance).

Needle rollers are indeed dirt cheap to make. Look at the price of drawn cup needle roller bearings.

The other gripe I have about roller bearings as used in bicycle headsets is one that is shared with a lot of modern headset designs, i.e. that there are many interfaces in the headset that can move relative to one another. I think 'the fewer the better' is a good arrangement.

Maybe you will find the half and half headset OK, but then again maybe you won't....

cheers

I hope you do find it ok...... Yes they aren't tapered in mine, but cylindrical, thanks Brucey.
