Dawes Galaxy Pannier Advice

Post by John_Kattenhorn »

Hi,

I've just purchased a Dawes Galaxy for communting to work on, i'm interest in some front and rear panniers, does anyone know if the conform to anytime of fitting standard ?

I've seen some panniers that i like made by Altura but i'm not sure if they will fit.

Many Thanks for any help.

I can recommend the panniers by Altura - I bought a pair of their 'Orkney' rear panniers and they're great. The locking fixings are very secure and you can take them on and off your bike at the push of a button. They should fit your Dawes rear carrier with ease although I disposed of the rack on my old 1988 Super Galaxy and fitted a Tortec 'Expedition' rear rack (£29.99)

Try www.onyourbike.co.uk

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, i'm looking at the Altura 46's. I'm guessing the fixings should be the same.

I've heard a lot of bad things about the standard racks!! Defintely change them at the weekend me thinks!!!

Thanks

Having bought a Dawes Galaxy in March and using it for a tour this summer I used Ortliebs front and back. They were excellently robust and completely waterproof, though to be honest they only got one soaking in 13 days. However I have to admit I missed having webbing and side pockets where you can stash maps, money, extra water etc and not have to undo the whole bag every time. This is of course the trade off for complete waterproofing - no stitching means no webbing/side pockets etc!

I've got a Galaxy with Tubus Duo front rack adn standard rear rack. I use Ortlieb both front and read and they are excellent - Bike Packers rear and Sport Packers front. The Ortliebs come with inserts to adjust the size of the clamp onto the rack - standard is 10mm. No sway and really robust - woth the money.

Yes the standard racks are awful. I didn't use the front at all and the rear only had fairly ligh use on my galaxy for about 8000m. I then rang Dawes to enquire about their sufficiency for a heavier load on a 6000m tour. The man cooly assured me they were adequate for about 50% over the weight I'd be carrying and there were no weak points. Rubbish. Rear one lasted 150m, front 2700m.

About Altura. I had their skye front panniers and they fitted beutifully to the back but NOT the front for some reason. I prefer carradice super C's but altura are still reasonable

I've found Carradice Super C to be fine.
