Carbon Forks that fit 28mm Tyres and mudguards

Post by declas »

I need to replace my carbon caliper forks on my Van Nicholas Yukon. Current forks are un-branded. Has any one used Carbon forks that will take a 28mm Tyre and mudguard.

Having researched a bit some possibilities are:
Deda Black Rain 1 1/8 Force Fork with Eyelets
SPA CYCLES Carbon Road Forks
Van Nicholas VNT Fork ADX Carbon Audax, Alloy Steerer, 1 1/8

If any one has experience of these or others that experience and your thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks

Small differences in the length (axle to crown race seat) or offset will make a difference to the handling.

I've got this fork and I'm currently using it with 25 mm tyres and mudguards. If I can find a wheel with a 28 mm tyre I'll pop it in and see what clearance there is.

There is a range of Columbus carbon forks on the Ceeway site. This company specialises in supplying frame builders.

Hondated thanks for this. Do your forks have full cover mudguards, and if yes does the wheel and 28mm tyre fit? An easy fit or close clearance? Thanks

Thanks Woof that would be greatly appreciated. Its a real pain getting a non disc/cantilever fork that will take larger tyres and mudguards.

Just popped a front wheel in from another bike. So I tried this combination:

Deda Black Rain carbon forks with 28mm Conti Gatorskin.

The only slight scraping was where I hadn't properly secured the DIY mudflap, otherwise the wheel spins okay. Not acres of clearance, but enough to make it work.

FYI - the tyre is mounted on a Mavic MA2 Argent rim, which may make a teeny difference:

Hope this helps.

Keyboardmonkey thanks for that. I can see the tyre has good clearance without the mudguard. Bit tight with the mudguard. A slightly wider mudguard would increase tyre clearance out with the forks but would probably need a bit of customising below the bridge and between the fork blades. I appreciate it can depend on the rim and the profile of the tyre the rim engenders. The only real way is for me to repeat your exercise with my wheel and mudguard and a Deda Fork. It looks though in principle the Deda will take it.

Relating to the previous posts I emailed Van Nicholas and they have stated that
1. Van Nicholas forks will take a 28mm tyre and mudguards.
2. Spa Carbon Forks have said the same.
3. Deda black rain fork. Looks a definite possibility.
4. Kinesis DC07 state "The ‘DC07’ is specifically designed to work with larger winter tyres [will take a 28 no problem] and full size guards". Fatbirds Norfolk said "From past experience we have fitted 28 width tyres within the Kinesis DC07 carbon fork, but the fit is very snug and the overall effective width of the inflated and fitted tyre varies according to the rim width.

Probably wont fit
4. Ribble said CSN BlackStorm Mudguard wont fit a 28mm tyre and Mudguard, only designed for 23mm.
5. SJS Cycles said the Ambrosio Momentum Carbon Forks said "The axle to crown in the same at 380mm, but the opened out section for mudguards is a little tighter at just 40mm. "They’re really designed to be run with 35mm width guards, but I don’t think you’d struggle fitting your guards in there – at worst they’d just need trimming down a touch" There website stated - Will accept 25c tyres and mudguards require 57mm brakes (or 28mm without).

This is my current list in descending order of suitability.

Declas: have you checked all these forks have the correct offset and length to match your frame, as 531colin mentioned? That’s important.

The Spa carbon fork I received with my Audax frame appears to have been made by Aprebic. It is nicely finished. With crown race fitted and a long, uncut steerer tube (about 300 mm), my example weighs 609 grams on a calibrated balance. It looks like it would have room for mudguards and 28 mm tyres at the same time, but I haven’t yet tried that.

Samuel yes offset and length all fine. I have a friend in the next village who has the Spa Forks on his Spa Audax. I m off to check with my wheel and mudguards shortly. Will post the results.

I've done a few thousand miles on mine and would recommend it. A good compromise of cost, weight and strength. Plenty of space for a 28mm and proper guards, comes with eyelets. It's a straight steerer, not tapered.
