Last October I came across a long line of statioary traffic and worked my way to the front where I found a nasty RTA - upside down car, sideways lorry, trapped woman and child, two ambulances, lots of fiemen, helicopter - and several lengths of metre length screwed rod. A few lengths were in danger of puncturing tyres when the traffic got moving again so I picked them up and laid them across my rack. They stuck out further than my very full panniers and not even a white van drove close for the rest of my journey. Not sure they'd make any difference to a skip lorry though.
