Cycle Lights For Bar Ends?

Post by AndyBSG »

Saw this on my drive to work this morning but didn't get a chance for a proper look.

Cyclist ahead with usual rear light just below saddle but he also had what appeared to be lights mounted on the end of his handlebars, not forward facing beam ones but ones that actually just showed where the end of his bars were.

Was quite impressed because even though i'm a regular cyclist so always give other cyclists plenty of room it really did show exactly how wide the clearance was and noticed that the car in front of me passed him much wider than most drivers usually do.

I don't know if they were jury rigged or an actual commercially available light and wondering if anyone has come across anything similar?

All seem to be suitable for drop bars, not sure if there's anything for straights.

There is somewhere - I used to have some...

Of course it restricts the bar ends for other uses (like mirrors)

Winkku mirror with lights for offside of flat bars. Wife has one on her shopper - not especially bright, but every little helps?

I use reflector bar ends http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Bike-Ribbon-Ref ... _61746.htm the review says rubbish but they are reflective ok and a bit of tape bulks them up (if needed) so they stay in place.

I bought some about 10 years ago and found that my bars were a bit narrow so that I partially blocked the lights. By the way it's not that I'm huge at the time I was about 10 1/2 stone.
The first time it rained that would not turn off so I sent them back, but that could happen with any light if it were poorly constructed. Hopefully newer models will have improved.

I still like the idea though.

Maybe you could use Frog lights? They're small and bright, and mount just about anywhere.

I have seen them for straight bars (like these, seem to be discontinued).

I've tried a drop bar version, and gave up due to lack of durability.
Another problem is that the light is aimed exactly parallel to the end of the handlebar, which in my case is at the road 5m behind me, and combined with the fairly narrow beam you get from most LEDs, this means that they aren't nearly as bright from back down the road as they appear in the hand.

I use 3m reflective tape in odd places - can get different colours. Some red tape goes on the edges of my car doors so that it can be seen when open, and also the edges of the boot lid.

On the bike - some on my pedals 'cos I couldn't screw amber reflectors to them. I have some white somewhere, when I find it I'll put some little patches onto the wheel rims.

I've even had red-and-white reflective bands around a walking stick!

And this thread has now given me an idea for locating a couple of little patches on the bar-ends - never thought of that, ta for the tip.

At one time you could buy metal expanding end plugs with a recess in the end; these came with self-adhesive reflexite discs. Nice idea but when time came to change the bar tape, if the end plug needed to come out then the disc got wrecked. Hey ho....

cheers

I've a pair of old amber reflector plugs plus a flat bar rear facing double LED light that fits straight into the end, I've had both in a box for over a decade, never got round to using them. :(
