Cycle Repair Workshops - Chelmsford?

Post by AndyBSG »

Hopefully someone on here can offer some suggestions.

Before I moved to Chelmsford last year I lived in East London and was lucky enough to use the http://www.towerhamletswheelers.org.uk/workshop a few times who ran a once a month drop in session where you could get advice and help with repairs and maintenance.

I've now got a few major overhauls to do on one of my bikes(pretty much a complete rebuild swapping out the wheels, disk brakes, groupset and any other things I can afford to upgrade).

I want to make all the changes myself and not pay someone to do it but i'm not fully confident so was wondering if anyone knows of something similar to the Tower Hamlets Wheelers in the Chelmsford/Essex area?

Maybe this forum?? Not quite the same as talking face to face though.

I'm OK on the advice front, usually get answers to most of the questions I have either on here or through Google.

It's more the practical side as in when i'm about to fit something am I doing it right, have I tightened everything properly, put the right bolts in the right holes etc.

I've also broken a few things in the past as i'm quite heavy handed and have sausage fingers which is where I found the Tower Hamlet Wheelers a great thing as there was always someone there to check what I had done was right.

I've basically got a complete bike build to do on my Carrera Subway as i've been buying bits for the last few months so am replacing the entire groupset, disc brakes, wheels, stem, handlebars and headset... essentially everything apart from the frame.

I'd like to have a go myself but just have nightmare visions of me taking it all apart and being left with a frame and a load of parts I have no idea how to properly fit and adjust as up until now i've only done very basic maintenance :)

If I can't find something similar to the Wheelers locally I do have a good LBS who can do the work but it sort of takes the fun out of it getting someone else to do it.

You could try http://www.hubandspokeharlow.co.uk/web/

They do things like that & might know if there's something closer. I have some other contacts who might know; pm me if you don't have any luck with Hub & Spoke.
