Until you can trust them to hold on reliably, the trailerbike isn't really safe.
I think the only option is a trailer. With full straps plus a rollover cage, this is the safest you're going to get until the child has mastered a trailerbike.

Obviously you know your kid better than the rest of us but my daughter was using an Adams tag-along when she wasn't quite 3. We weren't convinced but the LBS steered us towards it and we took the plunge. When we bought it we rode the bike and tag along to the local park (with a nice cycle track running down the middle) and my wife rode with my daughter on the back and me running along side. My daughter just held on and we've never looked back. Arguably it was easier with her in these earlier days than now as she's bigger and can wobble the bike easily.

So, do you know anyone with one that you can try out? Some friends of mine came round to give ours a go with their daughter and bought one the same day.

that's a good idea, whilst i don't have the confidence in him, i would willingly try on some wet grass that wouldn't hurt too much

OK, so has anyone got one, they don't mind lending for an hour near lincoln? :D

or better, got one that their children have outgrown?

He really needs a full size bike! Of course until he grows into it you may have to ride it, purely to keep it on good order!

Have a look at this http://yubaride.com/ . Plenty of room for your son, wife and the weekly shopping. A bloke turned up at my back door last weekend on one to take delivery of 11 bicycle wheels I was freecycling. He rode off quite happily with them strapped to the rack.

Tag a long

Tag alongs are fine for a 3+ yr old along as you are not on the road. As soon as my 3 year old was big enough he was on it, fully confident. So confident that he asked for his stabilisers to come off his bike, and was solo at 3.5 yrs. He managed 20+ miles in an afternoon around the peak distist cycle track just after his 4th birthday.
Brought mine off e bay for £30 best purchase in years. If you do buy one ,make sure that it is one that folds in two, otherwise you will struggle putting it in a car boot.
