Police motorbikes at ASLs

Post by ChrisO »

It seems even the motorcycle police have decided that Advanced Stop Lanes or whatever they're called are for their use.

I saw two on patrol this morning coming up Hampstead Rd towards Camden. The lights changed to red and they just cruised on into the very clearly marked ASL.

Normally I wouldn't get too outraged about these things but 100yds back down the road I had seen the same pair telling off a cyclist for creeping through a red light. Fair enough too but rules are for everyone, not just the public.

Does anyone know how I can report this, so that it can be officially ignored ? I have their registration numbers.

They say thatr the most common crime in the police force is petty larceny, so you might not get very far with the report; They generally go on to grand larceny after they have left, but breaking lights or using wrong lanes is not one to bother about.

The only advice I can give is to go to the station and report registration numbers and time. They shouldn't do it. It's equivalent to cycling on a pavement (for which you can be fined up to £500 I think.)

Note that the most recent highway code provides a loophole for them though. You must stop before the first white line as before, but if you have already crossed it when the lights change to red you must stop before the second white line (in our ASL.)
