Half price "Shimano 105 5800 Groupset" - whats the deal?
Hi All,
Noticed this last night:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-105-5800-groupset/
SAVE 50%
List Price £559.99
Sale price: £280.00
Whats the deal with this?!:
Q1) This is a genuine off season sale price, or are they permanently on "50%" off
Q2) How come 50% off? Is it simply no one buys the full set, or are they constantly "h#lfords" specials, where bits are missing fro previous people ordering box, and sending back, minus bits?
Q3) If I get a LBS to fit, realsistically how much labour would it be from a reputably road bike franchise? (provided it will go onto the bike without any complications!)
Hope you can advise
Martin
PS:
We kindly priced up on the forum, the cost of simply changing a claris 8 speed into a triple chain rings - £215 in parts alone! so the above costings seem really reasonable and could tranform a good frame.

Re: Half price "Shimano 105 5800 Groupset" - whats the deal?
Or this Ultegra 5800 Groupset (57% off)
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-6800-ultegra-11-speed-groupset/
I've no idea if these are good deals or not.

These have been on offers around the net since mid last year at around the 280/300 quid figure , Merlin Planet X et al had them at that figure.. good value no doubt, a friend bought this 5800 11sp group set via ebay from an Asian guy working out of OZ with factory contacts free post from OZ and no duty for approx 265 mid sept 2015!!

That's a good deal if you're a 172.5 50/34 with 11/28 cassette man. Don't forget Quidco for another 3%.

Yeah, but will an 11sp 105 cassette fit a Formula 8sp hub?
...and is it a good idea?.....(be nice, now!)

Hi Colin,
Oh I'm just musing here.
Why 50% off on such supposed good kit?!
I'm going to stick with the cheap rear cassette idea for the current bike, and see how that goes!
Reading the comments - there are issues, eg spacers needed etc.

Martin
Re: Half price "Shimano 105 5800 Groupset" - whats the deal?
well a 'half price groupset' will either come in proper shimano boxes or it'll (more likely) come in an assortment of plastic bags. If the latter it is OEM/grey import stuff, originally destined to go to a bike factory (and be fitted to yer last year's trekiantalized bike or w.h.y.) , and the reason it can be sold 'half price' is essentially that there are fewer middlemen involved.
Quite where you stand on warranty and spare parts is anyone's guess; I would suppose that the warranty lies with the retailer in the first instance (so ask what warranty applies and with whom, and get it in writing) but Madison may tell you to take a hike in the event of a warranty claim even if it is stuff that is otherwise identical to what they sell, if they have not imported it.
If you happen to buy parts that Madison wouldn't have ever supplied in the UK (and the Nexus 4s hub is a case in point) they will certainly tell you to take a hike; they (rightly or wrongly) feel no responsibility to support UK owners of such by supplying spare parts or anything, even though they were fitted to quite a few UK bikes eg Claud Butlers.
er, 'no' and 'no'...?....
BTW a 10s cassette will fit a formula cassette hub, so if you want more gears (at the expense of durability) then there is something to be said for a 10s 'upgrade'.
cheers

There had to be something
Wouldn't the warranty be W'ggle's problem though?
I can imagine there being a delay in any replacements, for any high value items though.... the need to send back the defect item etc.
(The issue of them finding out they have no warranty their end etc is their problem though surely?!)
Regards
Martin

as I suggested previously you probably need to ask them that and if you are really concerned about it (some folk wouldn't be, shimano stuff is usually pretty good) preferably get it in writing beforehand....
cheers

Good point, you did indeed say so
Buyer beware!
Have a great weekend Brucey!
Re: Half price "Shimano 105 5800 Groupset" - whats the deal?
All that stuff wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If you're in the market for a really good 11 speed groupset and want 105, just buy it. It hasn't ever been cheaper as far as I can see. Go though Topcashback or Quidco for your extra 3% and then ride the bloomin stuff. If Shimano issue a worldwide recall after selling 10's of millions of them, go back to Wiggle. That's who your relationship is with not Madison. 105 5800 has been out for 2-3 years? Any issues would have been picked up by now. I have it on one bike, 6800 on another and 9000 on a third. For price/performance, it is unbeatable.

The 50% off is off the recommended retail price, not wiggles (or most other online retailers) normal price.

Because Mr Shimano sells things at a high price for the "must haves"?RideToWorky wrote:Oh I'm just musing here.
