I have a Garmin Edge 305 and an Apple Mac computer.
The software that Garmin supply for free is a little basic, and the maps are simple and very inaccurate.
I've downloaded a trial version of Ascent from a company called Kagi in USA. The cost, if I want to purchase is $41.31 including taxes. It looks very swish and loaded with facilities and gizmos.
Should I buy?
What do others recommend?

Mick,
Why not give it a trial and blaze a trail for us other Mac users.
It has a high rating on VersionTracker which is usually a good sign.
Here is a link to the developers site for those who want to have a browse.
I am looking forward to hearing how Ascent works for you and if you think it is worth buying after the trial.

Not a recommendation, but just links you might not have come across which may give you some useful ideas:

Just got one of those myself, great little gadget. Virtual partner is great, particularly when your racing against yourself on a previously windy day... However I suppose that's cheating!
Have you looked at the basic free functions on motion based (www.motionbased.com) ? Does that support Linux and Mac users? My preferred platform is Linux, but I've not had a chance to try it yet.

I checked out the links from Cylclist John, and sadly none of them come anywhere near the quality or facilities of Ascent.
I'll carry on using Ascent until my trial ends, then probably purchase it.
Here's a quick screenshot off my desktop:
Any part of the window can be opened right out to full screen size and analysed. The maps are worldwide and detailed, both with map, satellite image and hybrid. You can annotate the graphs and study until your heart's content!
I'll get back to you all when I've used it a bit more.
