Electronic "bell"

Post by ANTONISH »

Is it possible to purchase an electronic device that will simulate the sound of a conventional cycle bell ?
I've got a number of bells but the one with the nicest sound is a bit bulky and the "pinger " type that used to be mandatory in time trials ( I don't that that is still the case ) only seems to confuse pedestrians - most of them seem to cast about looking for the unexplained noise.
I'm thinking of something compact and easily mounted.

Sounds somewhat over-complicated - more battery stuff.

Have you thought of practising vocal bell imitations? Totally hands-free operation - lifetime product life.

Thanks for that mick..
I would encourage everyone to follow your link and play that sound.
I assume the bell is nicely made/nice to look at as well.
Am just sorry i don't have a bike it would fit on.
It's probably too big.

"Bell says "sumi-masen" ("excuse me") in a little Japanese girl voice when you push one button.
The other button produces a little synthesized Mozart.
Mounts to handlebars.
In black or translucent.
Amaze your friends!"

Several years ago a friend had as electronic buzzer which fitted in the handlebar end and gave a very loud buzz (sourced from his local shop, no longer there) - I looked on the 'net to buy one but couldn't find any!

Might be a Hornit? I had one but it makes a loud trilling sound, which people don't associate with a bicycle, so they just look around to see where the weird noise is coming from, rather than moving out of the way.

No, they're quite small.

This is mine on Mercian on the website!

I have one on the Moulton too, but it's a clamp-on version as the headset is threadless.

I also have a lion bell on the headset on my Thorn (no problem about spacers!). It looks great, is loud and has a lovely tone. I get some nice comments from pedestrians. But, some folk don't seem to pick it up as quickly as my old pinger, not sure whether it is the pitch or it somehow doesn't shout 'bike'.

How do you ring these Lion bells? Is the protrusion pushed, or pulled against a spring and released, or what?

They look great!

They're pingers.
Here's a shot from my Mercian's one not mounted at present.
See the spring?

He's in deep maintenance at the moment, and due to be reassembled in all his glory very soon. :D

The mercian i am assuming from the pic is 1 inch threaded. Doesn't that "clamp on"?

The versions are clamp-on (at a couple of diameters) or headset version.

Mercian is 1" headset version.

Thanks for the photo, Mick. Still a bit unclear which part strikes the bell, probably because I’ve never had a bell on my bicycle. This one tempts me despite its 55 mm diameter.

Bad photo, but hopefully you get the idea.
The striker is on a bendy spring and you flick it.
Not too hard, coz it's LOUD.
