suggestions for a weekend ride in east anglia please

Post by essexman »

Heres the scenario:

-Six blokes, mixed cycling ability (non to lifetime), all fittish. 30's.
-Max 50 miles on saturday , 40 miles on Sunday
    -Sept this year
-Need to start from Newport Station in Essex on firday nite or sat am
-Preferably get to see the sea.

I was vaguely thinking train to Norwich and head east?
Route, pub, hostel suggestions please?

Cheers

Train to Ipswich, head up around coast through Dunwich and Southwold, then loop through Broads to Narridge

I would suggest a train to Cambridge change trains to Bury St Edmunds (Cambridge - Bury trains not so frequent, needs careful planning). Cycle through the lanes to Great Yarmouth Y.H. Sunday ride the Broads area or North Norfolk to get the train back from a Station on the Norwich - Ely line.

Alternatively, train to Kings Lynn, then cycle North Norfolk to Sheringham Y.H. Sunday, the Broads area to Norwich Station.

Three of us cycled from Bishops Stortford to Cromer (through Newport) in a long-ish day last summer. We're mid/late 40's and not especially fit. We were bowled over by the beauty of Cambs/Suffolk/Norfolk. It's great cycling country and there were many delightful villages where we could have stayed.
I'm suggesting that perhaps your journey could start outside your front door. We plan to do it again in August with a few minor changes.

There is a very good Backpackers Hostel in Burnham Deepdale (on Nth Nolfolk coast).

Hi jake,

I've done that route before and its lovely:-) although in a single day thats some serious mileage! I've done a 50 mile ride to Bury from our house in a day, so you must have been nearer a 100. We have one guy who hasnt cycled since he was 12, so we need to keep our days shortish.

I reckon we might go for Peters suggestion:

Never been to the Broads, would be interested to know how you find the cycling there. We've been bitten by the East Anglian bug and hope to do an annual day/weekend trip. Any other suggestions welcome as long as they end at the sea !!
Our route from Stortford to Cromer was 118 miles though it was such an inspirational day it didn't feel like it.

Did Broads in February a couple of years ago (Ipswich/Dunwich/Lowestoft/Gt Yarmouth/Hinckling/Stalham/ Norwich), and found there were a lot of narrow lanes. Lots of 4X4s. including a Hummer, lots of mud on the roads. Still bootiful.
