Losing weight

Post by samsbike »

So after reading loads on this forum etc and using trackers etc, I managed to lose a bit of weight last year. Early this year, I slipped a little so went back to being more disciplined.

However despite doing what I did last year, over the last 6 weeks my weight has hovered exactly where it started and I cannot seem to lose the 2-3kg that I would like to.

What can I be doing so wrong?

Losing weight

You've been eating too much. Sounds blunt but that's the physics of the situation.

Oh and good luck btw. I've lost 11kg this year with 11kg to go to my goal.

Hi,
When I lost weight I cut out all the things we like to eat, it worked.
But there is a plateau you just have to look at what else you cut out, and of course smaller portions.

I am now eating what I did before I lost any weight and am stable, so I just need to cut out what I did before,
Alcohol
Ice cream
Chocs
Peanut butter
Biscuits

I have never returned to putting any spread on my toast at all, that amounted to 20% of my daily fat.

That's quite a bit in that time.
Hope its nothing silly, It took me two years to lose that much, I was afraid of losing any muscle.

That is what I dont understand. I log everything I eat and over estimate that and underestimate when I exercise. I have been doing around 2000cals a day, so something has to give.

But I take on board what you are saying and am trying harder to cut more out.

It isn't called slipping, it's called winter. A couple of extra kg this time of year is natural, now the winters over you don't need the carbs to stay warm, the nights are lighter so get out and do something.

If your diet isn't working try another.
Not wishing to get competitive with Mark1978. I've lost 22kg in the last 5 months, this was after a year of failing at other diets. I only diet three days a week, eat whatever I want on the other four but make sure I'm burning it, one high intensity ride, one long steady ride, one hilly and a gym session.

Except it isn't Physics it's Biology and it's a lot more complicated than calories in and calories out

2000 calories in one sitting is different than 2000 calories in 10 sittings

2000 calories of sugar is different than 2000 calories of protein, complex carbs, alcohol or fat

2000 calories to an adolescent teen is different to 2000 calories to a 50 year old man

2000 calories to a muscular body builder is different to 2000 calories to someone who is overweight

Stress, sleep, hormones, heat, cold, age, health, gender all play a part

And all these things and more interact with one another to make a very complicated picture

The physics still remains despite the Biology.

The biology can make 2,000 calories-in act as just 1900, 1800 or less calories-in but it can not make 2,000 calories generate 2,100 calories.
The biology just makes it easier for some than others because their bodies are less efficient.

Nah works out to about 1.5lb per week which is pretty normal. Just by cutting down nothing more really.

I agree with that. I've lost exactly the same since Jan 1st. Just cut out alcohol, chocolate and snacks between meals.

Alcohol was never an issue for me. But yes just get rid of the snacks and make sure your meals are a sensible portion.

In the end it's all physics. As we're all cyclists here it's easy to assume cycling will do the job. But it won't. Easier to assume that cycling is doing nothing. And indeed if you've been doing it for years your body is used to it so won't burn as many calories as someone unfit doing cycling for the first time.

If you really can't cut more day to day then take a look at the 5:2 diet. In the end it comes down to the same thing, calorie reduction but you're only doing it two days a week rather than 7 days. I tried it for a couple of weeks but I've gone back to normal calorie counting for now. I might look at it again if/when I plateau.

New evidence that our bodies compensate for dieting... http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/healt ... .html?_r=0

There is always a weight a person’s body maintains without any effort. And while it is not known why that weight can change over the years — it may be an effect of aging — at any point, there is a weight that is easy to maintain, and that is the weight the body fights to defend.

Researchers knew that just about anyone who deliberately loses weight — even if they start at a normal weight or even underweight — will have a slower metabolism when the diet ends. So they were not surprised to see that “The Biggest Loser” contestants had slow metabolisms when the show ended.

What shocked the researchers was what happened next: As the years went by and the numbers on the scale climbed, the contestants’ metabolisms did not recover. They became even slower, and the pounds kept piling on. It was as if their bodies were intensifying their effort to pull the contestants back to their original weight.
