Large mystery animal

On our way back from the club ride today we saw a large animal crossing the road about 100 meters in front of us. It appeared to be dark brown, and about three times the size of any fox I've even seen. I've seen a suspected black puma before, confirmed by others at the time. Any ideas?

We own some woodland, not extensive, but the rest of the woodland area is huge. We used to have a couple of border collies, sadly gone to the great dog kennel in the sky. I would take them up in the woods every morning. I'm only going back ten years or so.

One morning, I saw an "animal". Maybe 6am in springtime. It loped like a cat, but was much bigger than a domestic cat. Neither of the dogs saw it - both were quite elderly back then ............. but I saw it.

Maybe the size of a labrador dog. Sort of russet/pale brown, and definitely cat-like, and it loped away from us at speed into the undergrowth ........... and was gone.

Never forgotten it and never seen since.

Hello
That was almost certainly the greater lurking grunt snarking beast .
It lurks in the woodlands ,it lurks in the vales ,it lurks upon mountains and upon misty dales.
It lurks in the morning ,it lurks in the day ,it stares at you madly ,whilst dining on hay.
Yes matey !
Beware the Mighty Grunt snarker.
Peddle away ,cast not a backwards glance.
Its to awful to look upon and could well be named Lance.

Wallabies can range quite far from those couple of areas of the UK they populate.

Badger?

I ride through somewhere near a canal and I have seen them a few times, once one ran across a main road and went in a front garden and another one that was just running along the pavement of the bridge over the canal. I think they might bite if you go near them.

:!:

I saw a newt on the pavement once, I crapped myself thinking it was a gecko or something, it was very distinctive/striking looking from a far off distance considering its tiny size, that tells you everything, a scary looking thing.

Lord McAlpine has a Capybara that keeps escaping. It then sends in letters to the Henley Standard. Most amusing..

That description in the link, seems very much like what I saw up in our wood. The one I saw was brown and not black.
