Why are we supposed to believe a single word that comes out the the mouth of a thief? By the very nature of their trade - dishonestly acquiring other folks possessions - they prove themselves deceitful and untrustworthy, so why should we believe anything they say about either their methods or their justification for their lifestyle?

Because they are trying to change and be a better person, plus a lot of what they say does actually make sense, so even if you don't trust them, you can still learn from them.

What about a thief who pleads guilty?

Exactly the same reason as you should listen to Vicky Pryce when she appears on Any Questions, etc.

Is that after they've already been caught...?
I'd have more respect or their sincerity if they didn't wait until they'd been nicked before coming clean. By that point it's an exercise in punishment limitation, not a sudden epiphany about the evils of their ways.

There's a strong whiff of BS about the whole article. Since when have you been able to get half the retail value of a new bike for a used bike. Now and again perhaps with a little used high end bike but on the scale that this bloke is talking about it's not believable that there are fences out there paying that kind of money. I've read that most thefts are by addicts who sell bikes for paltry sums, like £20, to get drugs.
