New 11 spd ergos with shimano 9

Hi All

I've been running my 9 speed Shimano rear mech and cassette with 10 speed Chorus ergos using the cable re-route method successfully. I'm looking at upgrading to Chorus 11 speed shifters mainly to get the more ergo ergos (?), particularly the extra padding on the hoods as I'm suffering a bit with my hands.

I understand that with 11 speed the rear end works fine without even re-routing the cable but I'm a bit concerned about the front end. My current ergos are more or less friction shift (there are multiple clicks but I can put the front mech anywhere I want) but this may have changed on later ergo shifters. I'm using a 9 speed Ultegra chainset 26-38-48, will I have any problems with new 11 speed ergos on the front shifting? It's a big investment if it doesn't work!! I'd be really grateful for any help.

I've run 11 speed Chorus with a 9 speed rear mech. The front shifting is great with flat bar shimano front mechs, they're cheap, about £15 or so. I run a 26-39-50 chainset. I'd probably try whatever front mech you have before buying a new one, other people report many different things working. There are meant to be less clicks than with older ergos but still enough for trimming, so normally it takes two or three clicks between chainrings with one for trim. Shimano's mountain bike and flat bar mechs seem to have roughly the right cable pull to use all of the clicks well.

The rear shifting was good for me too using regular cable routing.

11 speed Ergos have different shifters for doubles and triples,
like Shimano. Athena was the top spec triple shifter, Chorus and
above are double only. Front shifting is now long arm, fiddly setup
and Shimano like

Note the new Potenza group has a 11-32 cassette.
2008 Chorus/Record were the last micro ratchet shifters.

Oh er! Last reply doesn't tie in with Bryce's resonse. I saw somewhere that although only double groupsets the new ergos will shift a triple. Anyone able to clarify? Thanks

Athena do triple and double.
All the rest of the groups are double only.

My Chorus shifters do shift a triple well. They are advertised as double only. Many other people find similar things. I've had better triple shifting with my Chorus shifters than with my triple Sora shifters, your mileage may vary.

My 10s Record and Chorus levers both do triple shifting.

Is that with a Shimano, or Campag rear mech?
