Forehead (helmet) rash.

Post by cycleruk »

I have dry skin across the top of my forehead which I put down to helmet rub/sweat.
I usually have a cycling cap under the helmet and it's always wet when removing helmet.
Even with no cap the helmet sponge is still wet. I frequently wash the helmet and sponge to keep fresh.
Does anyone have an antidote for this or suggestion for a cream/remedy?

Simple : Don't wear the helmet just ride safely for a while and see if it disappears.

Hi,
Funny I had the same about two weeks ago, which is funny for me because I have very oily skin, and a first for me, might be an age thing at 57............

Unfortunately can't guarantee riding safe.
Hit gravel a couple of weeks ago and glad that I had the helmet on.

I wonder what the Pro's do having to wear them all the time or is it me!

Cheers anyway.

Moisturise? :P Dry skin is generally an easy fix with your run of the mill moisturiser, though I'm no expert on such things.

Hi,
I had flaky skin not a red rash.
If I wear my heart rate chest strap for 24 hrs I start to get red rash. this is not itchy so its temporary and fades quicky.

Not exactly a red rash more a dry skin with a few sore small spots.
I'm going to try moisturiser and see if that helps.
Thanks.

If I'm wearing a helmet (which generally I try to avoid as much as possible) I often use a Buff (or other similar material tube). In hotter weather I wear it rolled up as a sweat band, in cooler whether as a skull cap. It seems to work quite well at keeping sweat & grime out of helmet pads and is easy enough to swap for a spare &/or rinse out during a stop, depending on conditions.

Hi,
I wash the helmet pads every ride, new pads are nearly the price of my helmet, cant even find some material to make my own.
I normally change the helmet when the pads are all stuffed, I do not spend a lot on helmets, and tend to keep them several years.

Started with the moisturiser last night.
Applied this morning under the cap before ride and will apply each night.
Hope it helps.

In hot weather I use a towelling headband - keep a coupleof them, one on my head, the other on the bars, when the one I'm wearing gets too sweaty I wring it out, and drape it on the bars to dry while I wear the other one. Then they both go in the wash when I get home! One more thing to try.

I use a buff, cut into thirds then folded in half and sewn, to make a thin sweat band.

In really hot weather. I use a full buff, soaked in cold water, helps keep me cool.

Still using cream when using helmet (with a cap) but forget generally at other times.
A little better but still there.

That's a month later and you've still got it.
I'd be trying rubbing a good local honey on it.
