Brexit impact on cycling

Post by eileithyia »

... will we see loss of revenue to cycling initiatives, erosion of cycling rights on the road.......?

It was in the UKIP manifesto but they only won a referendum, not an election.

Surely the increase in poverty, reduced house prices and increased fuel prices will mean more bikes on the road, even if they are a bit tatty.

Hi,
I have at least 12 bikes I could build up tomorrow.

I have seriously thought about a hire business, as the local hire shop charges £16.

One of my skip bikes cost over that to buy :)

I shall dig out my BS6102/3 front lamp in preparation for the ending of the European equivalence clause in the lighting regulations  .

Despite the people at the centre of the Brexit campaign ie;BoJo,IDS,Gove,Farage, etc, etc,we've just witnessed an even further swing to the right than it was before.
What will happen next is anyone's guess but IMHO it won't help cycling.

Why would that be likely? Public money may become scarcer and effect everything funded by that, but with PM Boris, or influential Minister Boris, cycling will probably do better. I would expect more cycle hire and cycle highways being encouraged and funded in provincial cities. Perhaps we will even get a close passing law?

As for a further swing to the right Corbyn is a waste of space. An effective leader of the opposition is urgently needed to effectively oppose Tory excesses.

Referendum result

Post by Philip Benstead »

Referendum result
May be too early to tell but
How will UK withdraw from the EU affect the CTC/CUK e.g.
Awarding of grants /contracts whose money originate in via the EU?
Will there be any other affect on cycling in the UK or UK citizen cycling in the EU?
Will CTC/CUK leaver ECF https://ecf.com/ ?
If Scotland leavers the UK will they leave the CTC/CUK?

That's a bit negative.

Nothing helps cycling now, the hype with cycling has not been backed up with proportionate safety measures, or even justice which you mention all the time.

That's when we were in, unless you are talking about promoting cycling and not specifically safety, no slight at all on your opinions, I am trying to understand specific gains whilst in the eu to us being abused on the road.

Yes, but should things recover they'd mostly move straight off, I'd think. And with no change in the road environment, why would people who don't want to ride in it now want to stay any longer than they have to?

I can't see Brexit as good news for funding for cycling promotion or the develpoment of infrastructure in the UK, I can only hope I'm wrong about that.

ECF has many members outside of the EU/EEA: https://ecf.com/community/our-members . Cyclists' Touring Club is a Registered Charity in Scotland.

What that means for the future, anyone's guess.

It may mean Scotland must go it own way?

There is speculation of another Scottish independence referendum.

Cyclists' Touring Club is a registered charity in Scotland as part of the UK and presumably it would remain so in an independent Scotland.

Whether or not the Cyclists' Touring Club would subsequently want to rebrand its Scottish arm from "Cycling UK - Scotland" to "insert name here", who knows.
