PUSH IRON

Post by tinyworld »

A few weeks ago I was stood at the tea van where I regularly go. One of the regulars turned up and said, in the best Yorkshire accent ist thar on ta PUSH IRON mate. No one else there had ever heard this term used before. However I can remember it from my youth. Has anyone here heard this term used before, is it just in Yorkshire or was it used in other areas of the country

I'd never heard either term until I went to university in Yorkshire many years ago.

When I lived in East Leeds many people called a bike a rod, missing off the push bit.

Over here in God's own country(Lancashire),where the sun always shines, the wind is always on yer back an' awe th'ills ar daenword,it used to be in common usage way back when though less so these days.
It's more likely in the modern era to be:- "eh up lad*! is that thy multi speed technikullie efficiunt plastic push iron?"
or even "caunt afford a car?" :?

*Lass can be used for chapesses or if the enquirer thinks the said cyclist is a big Jessie :?

I believe the Romany word for a bicycle is ' treader ', a pretty good description I think.

so far it seems to be a northern term. anywhere else in the country that uses it. Also nice to see the variations on the words.I asked at the autumn tints meeting the other week, if they had heard the term, to my surprise non had, which was a shock as the youngest was in his mid seventy's, going up to there late eighty's.

... and motorcycle trials bikes are/were known as trials irons.

Another Romany one ' griddler '.

You can learn how to repair 'em in Hull.
