Training / Riding patterns.

Post by landsurfer »

I ride 4 - 5 times a week. 1 long ride, 30 miles plus, the rest are 16 - 20 miles.
Would I be better just riding 3 x 30 mile rides ?
I'm 58, time trialled for 20 years and now want to enjoy my cycling not suffer from it.
Once a month I ride a sportive or AUDAX of around 100km, for fun and never suffer much.
Is a little and often better than longer and not so often ??

30 miles = roughly 50k?
conventionally, if you regularly ride 50k, then you will be able to do 100k without too much trouble
My instinct (no more than that!) is that as long as you do your one 30 miler a week, it doesn't much matter if your other rides are 30 miles or 15.

I rarely get out more than 3 times a week, and in the summer a 50 or 60 mile Sunday isn't unlikely. I can do 100 miles with no extra preparation, and at 69 I'm happy with that.

People I ride with who commute to work are always fit (and much younger than me!) so I think your several short rides and one 30 miler would also be fine, although different to my 3 a week!

You don't say what you want to train for, what you're already doing is working, do you have different goals? You could probably do less and still be fine on the longer rides as long as your general fitness remained the same. If you want to be faster or go further, then specific training for it is probably more beneficial than simply more miles. I like variety in my riding, I don't call it training but there's no doubt about the benefit when it comes to a challenging ride.
