Myth or true - must check for Glass etc, before pump up tyres?

Post by RideToWorky »

Hiya All,

Myth or true - must check for Glass etc, before pump up tyres?

Eg. would embedded glass bits etc. finally be able to cause a inner tube puncture, if tyres pumped up?
In practice, is this the case?

Its bit of a pain with full length mud guards etc to check for glass, without the maintenance stand to get the bike airbourne etc.

Regards
Martin

A myth (which I havent even heard of).
However checking of tyres will help to catch some embedded nasties before they make it all the way through.
Before pumping up is a good a time as any and after finding and fixing a puncture is a very sensible time to check.

Most modern tyres gave a puncture proof strip of some sort, that prevents bits of glass, flints, etc, getting through the tyre. Best time to check is when you are cleaning the bike, as you'll take the wheels off and inspection is easier. Most of the time I don't bother, as embedded bits aren't likely to cause a puncture. And I only pump up my tyres about once every 2 weeks  .

When mending a puncture, always check the inside of the tyres for whatever it was that made its way through the tyre to cause the puncture.

Mandatory? -no...

Beneficial? - yes....

inspecting/brushing the tyres off is much less inconvenient than having a puncture and/or a damaged tyre, mid ride.

cheers

I check on the outside then turn the tyre inside out then check the inside, one reason why I use folding tyres. Though the cause of my last puncture was found very quickly with the 1/2" pin wasn't hard too miss but getting out of the tyre was a little more difficult, luckily I had a multitool with me to get the stones out of horses hooves etc as well as a pair of pliers.

I don't think there is any real connection between the pumping and checking but it is clearly easy to do both at the same time.

Checking for bits of glass in tyres regularly.

Very definitely yes.

I do it before every day ride and very often before the 5 mile ride into town.

And hardly ever get punctures, despite running my tyres until they are pretty much bald.

I very often find bits of glass/thorns.

The job takes no time.

Easy - i just turn the bike over - easier for me than some - i use flat bars and the bar ends keep the bar off the concrete.

Sometimes cycling and bikes can still be nice and simple.
