We spent a few sweaty hours going up the twenty-odd Hatton locks with a boat this summer, only to find the cafe closed when we got to the top. About 6pm on a Saturday, so maybe it had just closed. Very busy with boats going up and down though. Lots of missed trade.

Pretty sure it closes at 1630 every day - your "missed trade" comment is interesting . . . AIUI very little custom comes from passing boats - lots of walkers and cyclists (and motorists)

Every time I've gone up Hatton on a boat I need something stronger than is available at the cafe! Fortunately it's only a few miles to the Navigation at Lapworth...

I know quite a few canal-side cafe's but perhaps the one that most appropriately addresses your query is the café on the canal side in the centre of Birmingham (at Gas Street Basin, between Brindley Place and the Mailbox) which is called "Canalside Café". Bit more than a tea room as it serves some meals and alcohol too. Until a few years ago it had a sign outside saying Bill Clinton had paid a visit.

Kings Lock Tea Rooms in Aylestone, Leicester. The new owners are very bike friendly - they have to be as they've no road access at all! (All supplies come in by barrow along the towpath).
Open during British Summer Time : Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Bank Holidays 11-4; occasionally open for drinks on Wednesdays but don't rely on this.
Nearest road is Marsden Lane.

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my iPad using hovercraft full of eels.

Moor up near the cafe, walk back to the canal bridge and car park, look up to you left - there's a Biiig pub up there, just a hundred yards away, above the dry dock!

Birmingham town centre (Gas st basin) has several, try the one on the boat under the footbridge to the concert hall, or the one in the old building by the brick bridge and the moored boats

The black shed by the swing bridge across to Slimbridge on the Gloucester/Sharpness canal has now closed.

You can cross the Gloucester/Sharpness canal further up to get into Frampton, some nice refreshment spots there.
