My Grandad started aged 13 in 1925 and retired in 1977 after 52 years service.Both my dad and uncle started at 14 in 1950 and both took early retirement in 1986 aged 50(more or less forced out).When I grew up it was a proper mining village and community but has a completely different feel about it now.I'm sure this is the same for all the pit villages around here.
