old shimano 105 v new tiagra

Post by shiznit76 »

Hi, my bike is approx. 10 years old and fitted with shimano 105. How does today's tiagra compare to that as thinking of changing my bike but 105 ones are a bit out my budget. Is it best just to stick to my old set or is today's Tiagra as good?

10 year old 105, would that be 9 speed?
Todays Tiagra is 10 speed & 105 is 11 speed.
Sora is the current 9 speed but I have no experience of this.

New Tiagra 10s 4700 is pretty good. You should try the shifters to make sure they suit you, but they share the shift ratio with the 11s stuff so the shifting is better than with a lot of other shimano 10s stuff.

The only downside is that (chain and cassette aside) the 4700 stuff can only be used with more 4700 stuff; other shimano 10s stuff is not compatible.

cheers

New 9 speed Sora is just as good as 10speed Tiagra/105 (the earlier variant) and better than 9 speed 105, so though I haven't used the latest Tiagra I would presume that would also be better than old 9 speed105.
