Sharapova, Convicted Sporting Drug User.

Post by landsurfer »

Sharapova, convicted of using drugs in sport, appealed and has sentence reduced .... but not overturned !!!!!!!
Why no outcry in the press and media as we saw recently with the use of legal TUE within cycling.
Why no calls for a life ban, stripping of wins, court action to recover advertising revenues and prize money.
WHY , WHY......

Sharapova won all her titles before the prescribed medicine she was taking was banned on 1st Jan 2016.
Her real "crime" was not getting a TUE for something about which Don Catlin, scientific director of the Banned Substances Control Group, said "There’s really no evidence that there’s any performance enhancement from meldonium - Zero percent."

The TUE lot were using stuff with known performance enhancing effects.

So is Sharapova to be ignored, her actions forgotten, because we are too frightened to open the pandoras box .... ?

Nope, not at all but it's not me who's ignoring the issue it's the media. What needs to be asked is why?
I suggest money is at the bottom of it,tennis has a lot to loose,it's big bucks much bigger than cycling.
Money doesn't just talk it shouts very loudly.

The TUE lot were using stuff with known performance enhancing effects.

So why was it banned then, if there was no evidence of performance enhancement? I suspect what he means is that no one has actually done experiments giving people the drug and seeing if their performance was enhanced better than placebo. On the whole, such experiments are not carried out, so this is a cheap assertion and unconvincing.

When you look at what meldonium is indicated for - coronary artery disease, seizures - and what it actually does - improve blood flow - one tends to suspect that it was being taken prior to 1 Jan 2016 because it was legal to take it, and understands perfectly why they banned it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meldonium

On the technicality that something was perfectly legal until banned, and continued to be taken only for a short period after the date it was banned due to an oversight that it was now banned, then on that technicality a relatively mild punishment is appropriate. Nevertheless the fact that athletes take substances apparently mainly, it would appear, because they are allowed to, and they then have to be banned, this does in fact stink.

The recent Wiggins revelations also tends to suggest that the system for permitting athletes to take drugs in some circumstances has the potential for abuse.

The point is that if she was prescribed the stuff when she won various titles it wasn't a banned substance. It was only banned in Jan 2016.

Yes but IIRC claimed she was unaware it was a banned substance.

Does anyone with a Ha/pennyworth of sence believe that?

That'll be about right.

They certainly are and if drugs testing in tennis is thorough they'll have to have a rethink

Yes she did use it after it was banned and has been punished for that. Whether or not she was using it when she won her various titles, it was perfectly legal then.

I don't think that I ever mentioned her titles ...
I was trying to make the comparison between the coverage of her drug taking (illegal) and the assault on our cyclists by the press regarding TUE issues. (Legal) .....
