Using XT on a new touring frame

Post by keyhavenpotterer »

I bought my wife an XT equipped mountain bike which has never been used. Too large, but too small for me. I would like to buy a touring frame to put all the bits on plus drop bars and sti levers for existing 7 speed bits if possible. I ride mainly on gravel tracks so a rough stuff touring expedition type frame would suit. I am 5'10" and ride 22 1/2" standard frame. Thanks, Brian.

You'll find that the forward position of the brake hoods for drop bars means that you might get the MTB frame to fit (depending on your wife's height!)

I'd try fitting the drops and hoods onto the MTB just to see if it will fit right. I did the conversion myself on an old Marin. PM me if you would like photos and a more detailed description.

thanks for that, althought the top tube is shorter than I would ride with drops. This Wayfarer frame by Dave Yates looks like the thing.

With 7 speed XT rear mech and XT triple, I understand from the Highpath site http://www.highpath.co.uk/cycles/notes/07.html that C20th 9 speed ergo power will work.

What does C20th mean?

If I look on eBay for the bits how do I make sure I am buying the correct bits?
Are these Mirage ok?

Help much appreciated. Brian.

Twentieth Century. Campag changed their kit around 2001 (I think) so it had different amounts of cable pull - you need to get the older versions.

I can't tell from the ad (although someone might spot the extra gubbin or subtly different decal to give it away!).

Have you settled on the Dave Yates frame? I'm waiting for one from him now (although I went for the 700c version in the end) - I've got a pile of bits for it, ready and waiting... Very exciting!

XT on to a new frame.

Sort of settled on a Dave Yates frame. Now think 700c is also the way to go.

Interesting piece about 700c v 26" here

This will need new rims for the XT hubs. Would be very interested in just what your pile of bits consists of, if you were prepared to tell!

Why not! I've just received an email to say the frame is done and just waiting for the paint...

I've gone for:

Schmidt front hub, XT rear hub, on Sputnik rims from Spa Cycles
Stronglight Impact triple chainset (from another bike)
Stronglight bottom bracket
TA chainrings - 44,34,24
Custom Marchisio cassette 13-30
Camapg Ergo shifters
Shimano rear derailleur, Campag front (both from another bike)
Tektro Froggleg brakes
Bertould stainless mudguards

and a couple of other bits and pieces I've not sorted yet - Nitto handlebars and seatpost probably, Brooks saddle (Team Pro or Swallow). It's an expensive way of getting a bike, but it's fun!
