That's pretty much what I was getting at when I started the thread.

i love gender politics, once you open that door you have to expect the countless possibilities that are offered up from the chaos of semi-collective emotional investment. it could have been much worse.

somewhere out there, men's rights activists are filling their carts with pink razors, cashing in the discount of a society broken by positive discrimination. that'l show em, that'l show the feminazis and their supermarket apologists! feminists don't even need leg razors. own goal, tesco.

i'm trying to comply with poe's law, but since it follows an albeit ironic joke it looks like i actually believe that... i don't... i'm being hilarious... can't you tell?

I don't usually buy razors, but when I have, they've been large packs of any colour from a sales bin at Boots. I think the last time I did that, I paid £1 for 20 or something like that. Mr. V uses an electric razor when he shaves (summer only), and either of us may on a rare occasion use one of the disposables. I think the £1 bag has lasted us 10 years.

As for the subtlety... we just like thread drift

About gender being a spectrum. Do we tell midwives they have got it wrong when they say "It's a girl"? Do we describe someone we met in the street as being "towards the male end of the spectrum"? I think for most purposes we still have male and female, men and women, boys and girls. And we just make allowances for those who want to reposition themselves. And hopefully we all buy the best razors for our purposes regardless of the colour.

But a minority of people are neither or both when they are born. And we still force them to be a binary something that they are neither born nor suited to. Even though midwife and specialists have become more sensitive about such things, there should be more categories. Some countries allow an 'intersex' or 'undeclared', even for babies. Just to clarify on the Gender thing, I do accept (of course) that Male/Female is not adequate for all people. But it works for such a great majority of us, so we use it as a general thing, knowing that there will be exceptions. It's a pity we have no word in English, other than "It", as an alternative to He/She. And we cannot call a person "It".

We do have the words now.

Here is a link explaining our new pronouns. It's all quite simple and so there is no excuse for blundering in and referring to someone as 'he' or 'she' based on their physical appearance or name.

As blackbike has pointed out, there are alternatives, but even if you are not comfortable with them, please think about what you have stated. Just because something works for the great majority of us doesn't mean it isn't offensive or discriminatory for the few who don't fit binary gender labels.

Think about other minorities. Should we design everything for people who can walk on their own two legs, go up and down stairs, and sit on standard toilets without assistance or extra space? It's much less expensive to build buildings that way, especially shops and schools. Steps also take up less space than ramps and lifts.

Afterall, it works for the great majority of us. We know that there will be some exceptions.

My Missus takes razors from my packet. She doesn't worry that they are blue instead of pink.

Glad that's not just me. She never buys chips either. Why should she when she can just have some of mine!

As a tolerant person who celebrates diversity several times per day I respect the right of others to use any pronouns they want.

Who am I to dictate to them on how they speak or write?

My live and let live approach also means I'm not bothered if a supermarket thinks it can make a few extra quid by selling high price razors of various colours to gullible people willing to pay for them.
