Maybe he's changed his mind.

A few years ago, eight to be exact, President Obama said he was going to shut the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. He didn't.

Maybe he's changed his mind.

Or maybe he hasn't.

Obama made a promise he couldn't keep. Why did he make it? It's almost as if he's just a normal politician, not the messiah we were told to expect.

Funny how all the marches and demos about Guantanamo stopped as soon as he took office. I expect they'll resume in a few days when Trump takes over.

In other news - the world's pop fans don't care at all as pompous 1980s band U2 delay the release of their new album because of Trump's election.

You've been given very good reasons why Obama didn't fulfill his promise on Guantanamo, reasons which as in other threads when faced with facts seem to bounce off.
You're are now concentrating on things nothing to do with Trump and the case in question namely his instability, huge character flaws and utter lack of diplomacy.
This man isn't someone down the pub pontificating and tweeting from his bar stool, but the President elect of the most powerful nation on the planet!
BTW if we're talking pop music he doesn't seem to be able to get a pop singer to perform at his inauguration :?

They will if he keeps his promise.
Gitmo, we’re keeping that open, and we’re gonna load it up with a lot of bad dudes out there.

It would be entirely consistent for people to be a little disappointed with Obama but appalled with Trump. No hypocrisy.

Streep one of those luvvies who live in a bubble of fame. success and money should keep her trap shut? At the moment looks like the UK will get a good trade deal from the USA, as Trump has a favourable attitude to the UK - if enough of the likes of Streep open their mouths then that might change? So SHUT IT STREEP

He broke his promise. What more do we need to know?

It is unlikely that Trump will be as bad a president as Obama. It is a pity that the likes of Ms Streep have remained silent as Obama failed to deliver. And now she pipes up before Trump has even had a chance to emulate Obama's failures.

Personally I think Obama has made an excellent statement of what is possible in the White House.

Scandals? no
Dignity? yes

The fact that he has been a President without 'control' of the legislature does make presidency difficult.

That he tried as much as he could to do the job, others thwarted that.

She "pipes up" at the Trump's lack of empathy toward humanity, which is something yourself and one or two others who've posted on this thread, turn a Nelson-like blind eye to the issues which threatens any dignity to the office he assumes.

+1
If the same could be said for Trump before he assumed office there wouldn't be such uproar!

A poor excuse, especially as the Democrats had majorities in both parts of Congress when Obama became president. He has not faced any particular difficulties in this area compared to other presidents, but he has not achieved much at all except the botched and unpopular Obamacare, lots of wars with US intervention, increased racial tensions and a crackdown on press freedoms. To his credit he did allow fracking to drive down energy prices in the US.

Obama has been a flop. I don't think the fact that he's been scandal free is something which counts as an achievement. Most presidents are scandal free.

As for dignity, what does that really mean? Presidents are dignified whether they are successes or failures.

The true measure of Obama's failure is that the country has decided to go in a radical new direction with Mr Trump, and to distance itself from his style of rule as soon as possible.

I've not seen any reports about the US wanting to do a "good for the UK" trade deal. Some reports are that such deals take a long time, others are that even if the US is keen, they always do a deal that is in the interests of the US - so the UK cannot expect anything particularly generous to the UK because we are the UK! I've seen nothing suggesting we are likely to get a "good for the UK" trade deal. And Trump has 4 years, we have two years before we can even start negotiating a trade deal so in all likelihood any trade deal will fall under the president following the imminent Trump term.

And I fail to understand how Streep's utterances would change the prospects for a UK/US trade deal. I'd always thought Ms Streep was a US citizen living in the US - so how will her comments become associated with the UK to the point of jeopardising any potential trade deal ?

A poor excuse? What will you say when Trump doesn't build his wall? Or deport all the Muslims?

That's why he was re-elected?

As for radical new direction, it isn't. But those presidential candidates who have been the most successful, at least for the last 25 years or so are those who campaigned on change.

Perhaps Mercurio was confusing Meryl Streep with Margaret Thatcher. After all, she did portray her (rather well, IMO) in the movie.
