Double sided toe clip pedals?
I'm a total novice and not ready to clip into my pedals! I'm planning on getting some pedals with a cage/straps. Does anybody know if they do double sided version of these? So a cage on one side and a normal pedal on the other? I know they do these for pedals with clips but couldn't see any for the pedals with cages.
My terminology is probably all wrong! Forgive me if I am talking some novice nonsense language! I hope somebody understands...

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
Toe-clip pedals are double-sided in the way you describe - the clips and straps are fitted to one side only, and the other side is just a platform. The trouble is you can't actually use the platform side when toe clips are fitted, because the clips will contact the ground when the pedals are at their lowest point of their circle.
Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
the way around that is to tighten up the straps, and forget about nylon toestraps.. always use leather.. will ..who still uses these..

I'm not sure what you mean by "normal pedal on the other."
If you mean reversible, in the sense of clip-in (SPD) on one side, and non-SPD on the other have a look at these:

While you could, theoretically fit some sort of toeclips in the reflector holes, I suppose, but as has been pointed out, you cannot ride easily on the backs of pedals fitted with toeclips.

Not always - there's plenty that aren't. Look on the Zyro website, and click on MKS - I've been looking at 'clips-n'-straps pedals over the last few days, and these are the best I've found..........in my opinion. You can 'phone Zyro - I've found them helpful.

Well here's one - I've tried others, but I continue to always choose leather. Sorry landsurfer.

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
I have several bikes with clips and what I suggest you do is get a set of pedals and clips but don't fit/tighten the straps. Use a proper shoe plate (cleat) on your shoes to position your foot correctly and help prevent it slipping off the pedal. When you get more confident, fit/tighten the straps.

Good point, well made...
During my 50 years of cycling i have ridden for at least 40 with leather straps ... top kit ...
Polypropylene dry faster ... thats it !!
Really ...
Although Jules and I have found other uses for the leather straps .........

Oh dear landsurfer - and sorry again - I've got 60 years of adult cycling under my saddle - sorry about that - couldn't resist
It's certainly true that the synthetic straps dry quicker, but I find them less flexible and less forgiving than leather (by which I mean decent leather) and they will flex that little bit more if they're tight and I need to get my feet out in a hurry. Sorry to be contrary.
I also find that the ends of the synthetic fray, and that they fray in the middle where the buckle grips them. As I say, sorry to be contrary - especially with you young 'uns.

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
LOL Respect to you Sir ...
As a convert to the way of the SPD I use toe straps for lots of non pedal applications ... holding my Carradice bag on to my rack... wheels on the bike racks, Jules ... etc ...
IF i was using conventional pedals in a TT event i would use leather for the reasons you have detailed ... Hold with flex ...
But all my bikes have SPD pedals now ...
Jules has a cycle components company specialising in Eroica style cycles ... she sells lots of leather straps ... Made in Northampton .... top kit ...

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
apologies if this is obvious to the OP but (almost irrespective of whether you intend to fit clips and/or straps or not) the right kind of pedal will vary with the kind of shoes you intend to wear.
Proper cycling shoes have stiff soles and will work with a wide range of pedals, but if you intend to wear ordinary shoes or training shoes, they may be a lot wider and/or softer in the sole or something. This means that MKS sylvans (for example) may not be suitable; such pedals can chew into the sole of a training shoe. Many other good pedals may not be wide enough, or might be too slippy....
cheers

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
I'd recommend you buy a pair of quality touring type cycling shoes that accept MTB SPD cleats, buy either Shimano or Specialized, most of these types have the cleat area covered by either a removable plate or a rubber cover over the cleat area so they can be used with toeclips and straps.
Toeclips and straps aren't the best option for someone new to cycling,I'd recommend half clips or clips without straps initially, with a view to either fitting the straps when you're confident with the clips only or moving on to double sided SPD pedals, which are far safer and when set up properly are easier to clip into and out of especially in traffic.
I'd strongly advise against clips/straps and slotted cleats which are an outdated system without merit compared to clipless pedals of today, some people persist with this system and it's their choice but they're in a very small minority, not without reason.
Edited for typos

Re: Double sided toe clip pedals?
Absolutely agree. As a serious cyclist for nearly 40 years I was using toe clips and straps for many years, and about 8 years ago went over to SPD - I certainly wished I'd made the change many years before. I wouldn't want to ride with toe clips and straps now, IMHO SPD are FAR superior.
