I don't think it's reasonable to expect somebody to deal with an incident like this and to drive a train. OTOH, I don't think it's reasonable to expect passengers to tolerate it without official assistance and protection.

bout time their strikes were made illegal? has gone on long enough.
Aslef members have rejected a deal with Southern rail that would have ended a long-running industrial dispute.

- smug ASLEF?

Good grief! Make strikes illegal and then what? Jail the drivers? Than who'd drive the trains? Conscripts from the unemployed? Except Hammond keeps saying we've got full employment at the moment, so that probably won't work.
Seems like it would be much simpler to take the franchise off of Southern and maybe let the railwaymen and women run the service instead.

nah dont want to jail them just pick their pocket when they cant afford their booze and fags and the hol in spain they would come to their senses? - the increase in employement I read is not due to UK citizens but people from the EU - Maybe some there who can drive trains? dont need 2 per train just one

You really know nothing about Train Drivers ....
Constant drug tests. Daily alcohol testing, smoking ... really ... ho ho ....
They even have a list of cities they cannot visit ... Amsterdam .... never ... they may pick up traces of cannabis in their hair by just being in the wrong pub or cafe...
Yes, not just urine tests ... hair strand as well ...
It's the union that is mad ... not the drivers .......
No i'm not and never would wish to be one ... but i interact with them ....
I currently support a fleet where Drivers travel at 125 mph ( 220 / 221 Voyager) and are personally responsible for the safety of over 200, 300 ... people ....
Personally Responsible ..!!!
Then someone steps out in front of them ...
Have some respect !!!!

Well I'm glad you've understood that. though it doesn't explain why you thing the Aslef would be smug, they've just had the deal they negotiated rejected by their members, I'd have thought they were the opposite of smug. They will continue to act as directed by that membership, what else would you expect them to do?

Well, seems to me, this was a democratic vote carried out amongst the ASLEF membership. And the vote indicated, by a clear majority, the wish to reject the proposal. The
'will of the people' so to speak.
Now where have I heard that expression before?

Some folk are very good a shouting the odds from the side lines but can't do the job they moan about others doing, and fighting for their rights due to safety issues which the rail bosses are all too willing to risk for more profit.
When I was in mining(middle management)occasionally I used to take groups of adults on visits around a working coalface.I'd always ask what they thought of it,without exception they'd say "your worth every penny earn down hear".
It's the same with train drivers,it's a specialist job with a lot of responsibility, and as if it's not hard enough they're wanting them to look after passengers without a guard to boot.
Guards also have a very responsible job too,it's not just a matter of blowing whistle and waving a flag.
They have my full backing.

54% of a 77.4% turnout.
A higher majority than the EU referendum vote

What's good for the goose as they used to say

The UK has the most regulated unions in the EU, thanks to you know who, I know it doesn't fit with your preconceived ideas but the membership have rejected what the union put forward to end the dispute, that's the facts.

But the experts in rail safety, the ORR, have said the southern rail trains would be just as safe if driver operated only. They just need to keep the camera lenses clean, apparently.
