Stingray is a NOT a British children's Supermarionation television series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson BUT...
"It’s 2017 and we’re facing something that you’d expect from a science fiction movie.
Secret police surveillance devices, often known as ‘Stingrays’ or IMSI catchers, are being used to conduct indiscriminate, mass spying on every cell phone in a given area.1
These devices work by mimicking cell phone towers, forcing every nearby phone to connect to them. Police are then able to track who you called and when, read your emails, text messages, and other data being transmitted.2 And you’d never even know that you’d been a victim.
All it takes to have your privacy violated is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. There’s often no warrant required, and police have no duty to notify the public when one is in use in any area.
Around the world, governments are pouring money into these devices. I
n the UK alone, Scotland Yard spent £1,037,223 in the final three months of last year. And in the U.S. it was revealed last year that federal marshals had used the devices almost 6,000 times"
Revceived this in an email from a security group today. Not sure about the scotland Yard claim (a re they called that now?) This a is new one on me. Lucky I dont keep my phone on all the time.
This article about the USA but as the above says our cops have them now

Wouldn't it be easier for the authorities to just invoke the terms of the network provider's licence, issue the appropriate legal paperwork, then get an official dat stream and traffic sent to their premises and snoop legally on whoever it is their after. Building a seperate "phishing" network and trundling round with portable masts and try and nab mobile devices in the vicinity - why would they do that?

It's end to end encrypted and isn't stored by the service provider - although tbh I don't know how good the encryption system is in the UK compared to the US. The US did delay introducing digital cellular for a long time after we had it and I read it was because they wanted a system that was hackable or had a backdoor.
Like everything though if you wanted to you can simply run an app (Skype for example) to provide encryption and prevent eavesdropping.

Well well well! I'm by no means an expert - this is digested (not literally!*) from Wiki....
There are many different species of stingray in our oceans (also a few freshwater ones). The commonest is a creature called the Common Stingray,
Dasyatis pastinaca. Found in NE Atlantic and Mediterranean, it often buries itself in sediment. It usually measures about 45cm across. It is not aggressive but can inflict a painful, though usually not life-threatening, sting, especially if trodden on (like the unrelated Stonefish species which are much more dangerous). Bathers in waters where they may occur should wear shoes and scuff up the seabed sand when walking.
They are not of value to commercial fisheries, though often taken as bycatch, made into fishmeal or similar. Not a threatened species, though all edible skates and rays should be avoided.
*The flesh is apparently not palatable as it is.

I'm afraid I'm too superannuated to sit easy with pictures like that floating around - sets the old knees a-trembling, and gets the old ticker palpitating - which ain't good for me (as Mrs P will probably lose no time in reminding me

).
So I've decided to put up a nice calming picture to go with my earlier post. Isn't it a beauty (in its own way)! Observe the sleek streamlines, the supple undulations of its swimming action.... Oh and - er - the stinger halfway along the tail.....

Not allowed after all we were told that the vote was to keep economic migrants out and take back control of the borders. We have been told there are far to many immigrants stealing our jobs and clogging up the NHS.
So only pure stock is allowed, Nora Batey for him.
