I ws always told to keep tyres at max pressure to lessen chance of punctures and pinch punctures. However, I will lower them slightly for slippery conditions.

Tyre pressure should surely take into consideration weight being carried ie rider, luggage, tyre size, and the type of road surface being ridden, also, what about icy conditions or rain?

In my case, because the general perceived wisdom seems to be that running at max' pressure seems to help alleviate punctures. We often ride on poor surfaces, & this does indeed seem to help. The thorns where we live are pretty tough, & we don't have much choice on routes.
