Finally booked our ferry from Portsmouth down to Santander, I think my mate got fed up with me talking about this trip or he just wants to away from the wife and kid, anyway the two of us leave on 1 September and cycle the coastal route up towards roscoff then Cherbourg and ferry back to poole, home about the 25 sept.. I'm hoping the breeze will give us a little push the weather is kind and we can get hostels or cheap B and Bs, what do you think ? Any other tips, maps etc will be welcome. cheers T.

Have a look at the Velodyssey cycle route from Spanish border to Roscoff. Some good bits, some worth avoiding and some a tad boring but it's a good base to start from and choose your own variations. Plenty of small hotels and B&Bs at reasonable prices.

personally I'd avoid the horrific bridge over the Loire unless you like being 300ft in the air over a massive estuary on a narrow strip of tarmac with articulated lorries thundering past....otherwise it could be viewed as quite an exciting venture and a highlight of relatively boring bit of coast
Saint Malo is quite a nice port to finish in, and just a good days ride from Carnac if you like that sort of thing
