I've stripped down a few bike with STI levers now and it seems Raleigh like to put brake cables into the STI levers with ferrules on whereas other manufacturers just leave the cable ends bare, with a flattened off coil.
What's the guidance on this? The ferrules sometimes get stuck in the shifter so I prefer the bare ends. I only tend to use ferrules in braze-ons and brake caliper adjusters.
Brake cable ferrules in STI Levers
Re: Brake cable ferrules in STI Levers
it varies with the levers/ STI/ergo units in question and the ferrules, too.
My suggested axiom is that
'if there is room for a ferrule, you should use one'.
You can tell if a ferrule is seating properly (rather than becoming wedged) by measuring the depth it goes to in the lever body on a trial fit.
cheers
