The only good thing about Yorkshire, is the road to Lancashire.

Yorkshire is lovely isn't it? I am biased as my mum was born there and, since she passed away, we like to go there once a year to see relatives - last year we stayed near York and this year will be near Bedale in early June and Mrs. Spinners is cool about me taking my bike and getting out and about.
The only loaded touring I've actually ever done was a three-day tour from Port Talbot to Middlesbrough and Day Three started from Goosnargh (near Preston) over to Skipton and then up into the Yorkshire Dales. Wonderful scenery and quite a test for a standard road double chainset!

Knowing both Yorkshire and Wales, and being fond of both, I am struck by the similarities between them. I know people will say Wales is a country and Yorkshire a traditional county, but the pride and sense of identity of the natives is very similar. So is the social mix, the history of coal mining, the sheep and the moors, and the (sometimes jokey) mistrust of anything from London. And both have some of the most magnificent cycling opportunities anywhere.

Jealousy gets you nowhere Mick
There are no roads to Lancashire from Yorkshire as all roads
lead to Yorkshire!

It certainly is, and it has huge contrasts, the big cities, industrial muck, beautiful coastline and the hills and moors. I'm from near Barnsley and despite the old cliches its actually quite a nice town. The countryside immediately to the west is lovely and largely undiscovered; the Trans Pennine Trail from there to Glossop and on is well worth a ride.
Where I grew up it was all pits and spoil heaps, all gone now.

Being born in Wales, then moving to the Wigan area as a 3yr old, back to the family environment, I'm a Wiganer (not born) but bred.
Dad and mum were Lancastrians, and all the ancestors before them. Mum's family came from the Coppull/Standish area, and Dad's family from Wigan/Ince/Standish. I was at primary school in Wigan, and secondary school in Shevington.
My life's blood is Lancastrian, but I live and breathe Cornish now. Been here 35years,
far longer than I was ever in Lancashire ............ or even Wales.

Lancashire day is November 27. On that day in 1295 Lancashire sent it's first representative to "That London" for the new parliament.
Interesting fact, England Football and Cricket teams wear three Lions (or Leopards) England Rugby wear a Red Rose.
The first England Rugby team were 15 Lancastrians.
