E G Bates

Post by chambo3413 »

does anyone know anything about E G Bates cycles, I have just bought off Ebay a very nice E G Bates from the mid 60's and would like to find out a bit about the history of the make, I know he was in business with his brother prior to WWII and set up on his own afterwards.

Getting back to the strait and narrow:

Sheldon Brown

As usual, SB has something interesting.

They are associated with the diadrant forks, which had a sort of extra bend towards the tip. I have always assumed that such twirls - including the Hetchins 'curly' stays - were intended to get round the RTTC ban on advertising which even banned name transfers on frames.

I remember the company used to do mail order from Plaistow in the '80s, if only because I bought some nice stuff dirt cheap but I'm not a Larnarnar, so no personal knowledge.

I don't know if you have googled but I found this, which has been written by the other surviving half of the family split (Westcliffe on Sea) but it has interesting info about EG Bates as well.
