Headset Problem

Hi all,
I need a steel or alloy headset with a stack height of about 34mm for a 1950 W F Holdsworth "Cyclone". There seems to be a shortage of Campy Gran Sport or Record Pista at the moment but I've come across a Tange Seiki Levin CDS Threaded Headset C.P. in Silver. 1" which may do the job 'till I find a better one. Although all the specifications seem to be correct for my 531 road machine, one of the web sites lists it as a BMX headset. Does anyone know if this will do a temporary job and allow me to build the bike completely and what do the letters "CDS" signify?
Cheers... Alex

I wouldn't worry about what 'CDS' means, and I doubt that (in functional terms anyway) you will find 'a better headset'. If you fit it with loose balls it will probably outlast the rest of the bike. [It is a pretty fair reproduction of a Campag Pista headset, but with seals fitted.]

However what it won't do is automatically fit your bike; old English headsets of this period can match fairly well to the current JIS standard, but then again your frame may already have had an ISO one fitted to it. The Levin CDS is available in either fitment.

cheers

Thanks for the information, Brucey. I'll go ahead and buy one. Even if it doesn't outlast the old bike, it will certainly outlast me.

Now bought and fitted, Brucey. It fitted just as it should, seems very good quality and I think it looks great.
Many Thanks... Alex
