Which 9 Speed Chain?

Post by irc »

Needing a couple of 9 speed chains. Looking at either Shimano HG53 for £8 at Planet X. Or KMC X93 for £9 at Wiggle.

Which of those two or is there anything worth spending more on? For touring and commuting use.

KMC chain comes with a quicklink that is easy to use and re-use (even if they say its single use only), Shimano comes with a special connecting pin that you push through then snap off. Only used the Shimano system once and whilst it worked fine there seems more potential to mess it up so I have avoided it since then.

As we speak I use 2 SRAM 971's , hold up well, not expensive and come with quicklink which you can close and open multiple times

Thanks for replies. Went for KMC X93s at £9. Tend to put chains on then leave them on until worn out. So the ability or not of the KMC link to be re-used shouldn't be an issue. Think I've got a spare SRAM link in my toolkit anyway if required.

KMC is my goto choice. Bike came with Shimano HG53, which lasted less than 500 miles (dry flat riding). KMC X93's have never lasted less than 2500 miles yet in the same conditions. No brainer in my book.

KMC.
Shimano can do quality but not at a comparable price. The cheap Shimano chains are dreadful.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

+1 for KMC. I have been using them, including the 9 speed one listed above, for several years and have always been satisfied.
