Worlds worst shoplifter?

Post by BrownBear »

It's my habit to fill my Bob bag when at the supermarket, in order to avoid repeating the time I bought more than I could carry (could equally apply to panniers I guess). I do this 'blatantly' and empty at the checkout. Never had a problem in Cambridge, maybe they're used to it there. However, in London, I have been stopped and told this is against 'company policy'. I can kinda see why, though the bag goes past checkout. So now I have to buy significantly less to ensure I don't end up carrying a plastic bag in my mouth. Of course if I take the car no issue with filling the trolley. Anyone have this problem, or is just me?

You can still use a trolley even without a car, this does of course remove the natural safeguards against buying more than you can carry in your bike bags.

I often use a carrier bag in shops when they do not provide baskets, it is easy to demonstrate that you have fully emptied them at the the till.

Fortunately most of my luggage has an ability to swallow up ever growing amounts of shopping by having extra capacity through expansion. Though last trip did end up with a couple of crushed bags of crisps.

I tend to use the smaller trolleys and repack onto the bike. What worries me a bit is leaving the shopping unsecured on the bike while returning the trolley. Any solutions for that? Lock the bike to the trolley park? Needless to say the bike stands are nowhere near the trolley parking...

Encourage the shop to put a trolley park near the bike stand by leaving your trolley at the bike stand?

I did have someone say something to me a couple of times, so I just shopped somewhere else.

I was quite happy when Sainsbury's started doing the self-checkout with the scanner that you carry round with you. I can scan stuff as I load my trailer or panniers, pay at the end, and just take it out to the bike, as I loaded it/them.

Then the bike stands get used as trolley parking

My  was a comment on how the typical shopper thinks of bike stands, not your suggestion! I have experience with this. https://www.google.no/maps/place/Colche ... 4d0.891874 did just such a thing, installing trolley parking at either end of the bike stands. So, the entire area was used for trolley parking. I complained several times. They did start checking it frequently, at least. The satellite view makes me think that they took the trolley parking near the bike stands out.

Had it happen to me once when I went shopping and carried the rucksack around the shop with me and filled as I went. The security guard didn't say anything to me but followed my every move from 8 foot away. When I got to the checkout and emptied the bag and turned it inside out, I did ask if he wanted to pat me down to see if I had any bananas stashed about my body.

Loading straight onto a trolley does appeal to my sense of 'time and motion', though that's one aspect where the Bobs single wheel Bob would be lacking. But I'd still be falling foul of 'company policy' and potentially given a talking too. Love the offer to be searched, must remember that. In a way I feel sorry for the security guard, I know what is like to have to follow corporate rules. I guess I should try somewhere else, and treat the extra distance as good burden hauling training.

I betcha its not against company policy Brown Bear. They didn't like it for nonrational reason, so made up a LOB on themspot to justify it.

One regularly reads articles about how the stores trick one into buying more than intended

Muzak is meant to increase sales, not for me, it makes me leave ASAP and buy less

Experts have proved that most people incline to the left so many stores are planned accordingly

New trolleys are available that run better when they are loaded!

I tend to let the store detective's follow me around.
As long as I'm not concealing anything about my person and don't go past the checkouts there's not a dam thing they can say about using your own bags.
After all they're the ones encouraging you to bring your own bags to help cut down waste.

Also I tend to use Tesco's "scan as you shop" then put it straight into the bike pannier bag, go to pay point, pay and leave. Simples.

I just have enormous panniers that hold it all, and ditch the trolley by the stands.
