Do you know how to identify classic Dawes bikes?

Hi
I'd be massively grateful if you can help me indentify the age and model of a Dawes Reynolds 531ST frame. 23inch frame, 18 speed. I don't know if it's a Galaxy or a Tourer or other. It seems to have had its front crankset updated to a triple chainring. Somebody told me I could possibly identify the age through the wheels. Here are the pictures:

Hi laklop, welcome to the forum
It looks like about an '88 /'89 Galaxy, not unlike this one apart from it's updates.
http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=151093By 1990 Galaxy looks like it came with a brazed on loop for the rear brake adjuster according to the catalogue here, unlike the
bolt on one on yours. They normally have Galaxy written on the top tube ,yours top tube looks a slightly different shade of blue
from the rest of the bike in the picture, maybe it's been oversprayed at some point ?
I can't get the actual catalogue to link to here ,but it's in the attached list
http://veterancycleclublibrary.org.uk/l ... D&items=80I'm sure someone with more hands on Galaxy knowledge will be along with better info', I did find a post here giving chapter and
verse on all the subtle differences of different year late '80's Galaxies, but I forgot to bookmark it and can't find it now.

read the markings on the hubs; they will include the year and month of manufacture of the hubs.
cheers

+1
Cantilever brakes look like Shimano BR-AT50 which will have manufacturing
date codes on the reverse.

89. I was saving kike crazy for a new one, which was to become my first decent bike. It took me a bit longer though and i ended up with the 90 model, which thankfully had the same colour with decals in white...i spent hour looking at the brochure! Happy memories.

So we all said the pretty much the same thing with little doubt or error. Some posters went to the effort of finding links and catalogues etc.
A bit irritating then, that all of this was ignored by the OP.

It's somebody asking for advice about more than one bike.

Hi All, anyone know what the attached is? Says Dawes on the rear dropout despite Poyner stickers. BB has BJ278 stamped into it. Cheers , Matt

to me it looks most like a 1980's Galaxy from the period between when they fitted centre-pull brakes and when they fitted cantis; for a few years they fitted (thoroughly inadequate when you have a load on) long reach side pull brakes, and the gear levers were band-on with no top tube braze-ons. The parts look mostly original to this era of bike, and many will have date marks on them.
cheers

Poyner of Wolverhampton was cycle shop in, err Wolverhampton. I know it's not about your bike, but this post (
viewtopic.php?t=35257 ) gives as lot of history about them.
