OEX Phoxx 1 Man Backpacking Tent

Post by robing »

Anyone got any experience of this tent? Looks ok for £60 from Go Outdoors. Pros - light, nice low profile so good in the wind, good ventilation and HH 5000. Cons - prob a bit cramped for anything other than sleeping in. Shame it's black.

OEX Phoxx 1 Man Backpacking Tent

Not this one, but we have an OEX 2 and 3 man. I can vouch for their quality at this price. Can't go wrong. I only sleep in my 1 man. If it's raining I'll cook under a roof somewhere.

I was in my local Go Outdoors and there was one on display. I would suggest you visit your nearest store and crawl inside one. A friend of mine had one in Scotland the other year. We were hostelling and only had to use the tents on a couple of occasions. It looked well made but was really tiny and very low.

Hi,
As said, on paper they look fantastic, its not to you crawl inside and that's the real decider.
As a rule of thumb unless you are a stealth double agent :) Sit up in the tent!
Being able to do that makes a world of difference to your comfort and experience.

Have a look at this at £70, with 5" more headroom, same weight.

Or contemporary black at £92.

Hi,
One man tents are just that, I don't normally expect to be able to cook in them.
If you require more space go for a two man, they will still be under 2 kgs.

Or even 1kg!

I could get by in a 1p tent but I can live in a 2p. If I choose to camp on a trip it's for enjoyment not punishment. Someone I worked with a while ago was so obsessed with micro camping they made their own kit and the tent he came up with wasn't much bigger than his sleeping bag. It really was like a coffin - he conveniently lost his pegs on one trip so he could share the space in my 2p tent!

He was an experienced extreme sports person - multi iditabikes, ice climbing, ultra marathons etc but he still got it wrong on many occasions trying to go lighter/smaller without thinking about insulation/HH etc.
Convention? what's that then?

Hi,
My trainer always said check your camp site before moving on.

He would delight in collecting all the pegs we left behind

"Low profile" is says, inna rather splendid "this is a feature not a bug" stylee.

70 cm maximum headroom. That really is not very much at all, not enough to sit up in unless you're truly miniature.

If you are genuinely miniature or don't plan doing anything that isn't lying down, okay, but it wouldn't be one for me.

Crikey, that is a tiny guy in the GO diagram isn't it?

By my reckoning he is either 3 foot tall or way off in the distance.
Somewhat misleading?

I don't see the point of a tiny-sized tent where you cannot at least sit up and change your clothes, let alone cooking in the porch.
You may as well use a bivy bag then, ain't getting no comforts from such tent.

For a little more, but I'm sure a clone can be found cheaper as it's not really an exclusive design, this tent will have the same weight but a lot more room.

I've the same, got from GoOutdoors for £80-90 IIRC, and has been good when I used it a dozen of nights. I'm surprised the Berghaus one is 1.7kg as mine is just a touch under 1.5kg.
Im 5ft 9" and could sit up inside, and though a bit narrow it won't feel cramped due to the front porch that can be left open if the weather is nice. It proved to be very waterproof, too, during some torrential rain when I was using the flysheet only (another bonus, can use only the flysheet!).

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

I agree with Gattonero here. The one in question is sort of halfway between a tent and a bivvi and manages to combine many of the worst features of both...

You've made the whole answer a lot easier with less words 8)

I didn't miss your super observant skills [emoji6]Silly art staff!

Yes the OEX only has 70cm headroom. My Eureka Spitfire 1 has 100cm which makes a world of difference. But £30 more. Hmmm
