DIY map holder mounted on bar bag
Dear All,
The attached photo from the Cycle magazine Aug-Sep 2014 shows a clever arrangement to mount a map trap on to a bar bag. The photo is self-explanatory but before starting to cut holes int my watertight Ortlieb bar bag I was wondering if someone has some advice how to best proceed?
For example is the Polaris MapTrap that seems to be used here still available?
What sort of screws/rivets are used?
Where to get such a plexi glass strip from to mount on the bag.
Any advice welcome.

Hi
Yes, Map Traps are available with a quick Google
Stainless steel clipboard clips / bulldog clips (inc. SS spring) are cheaper

Have you thought about a kwikfix one mounted on the stem - either a small one or the bigger one with a bit cut off it
Re: DIY map holder mounted on bar bag
The one above is 40mm above handlebar level and protrudes 20mm in front of the face plate of the stem
Re: DIY map holder mounted on bar bag
I made myself one with recycled clear pvc, some grosgrain ribbon and two pieces or Velcro. It worked pretty well, keeping rain at bay.
Then the Garmin came, and I got lazy
In haste, a ziptie on the stem with a large paperclip, would suffice for the basic trip notes.

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

Are you sure they've cut holes in the pictured bar bag? It looks to me like they've used the press studs for Ortliebs map case.
If you do start punching holes and screwing things to it. I'd probably use the Ortlieb fittings

Be aware there's a fair bit of bounce in a bar bag, I never got on with trying to read the map in the Ortlieb map case. Klick fix do an attachment to fit stuff above the bracket, I don't think Ortlieb do anything similar (I haven't searched) Your ortlieb bag will fit the Klick Fix bracket but it all starts getting a bit expensive...

But note that if you use the patent wire system to prevent the R&K mount turning on the bars under load, the clips no longer fit (as I've just found out, after fitting the wire to mine.

Someone else told me they had problems fitting this, turned out to be an older model holder that wasn't compatible. Mine fits fine. Slacken the screws a touch, rotate the fitting upwards so there's a bit of slack in the wire, the clip will then fit between the wire and holder, push the holder back down into position, re tighten the screws. Job done and it's rock solid.

In the good old days pre aero levers you could use a poly bag and clothes pegs to hang it on the washing line ( sorry I mean brake cables)

Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X2, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840, Giant Bowery, Apollo transition.
Re: DIY map holder mounted on bar bag
If your bar bag has a carrying handle I use Bulldog clip and clear A4 plastic file envelope, simples

Re: DIY map holder mounted on bar bag
Dear All,
Thank you very much for all your excellent advice, which eventually pointed me away from the dreaded punching into my Ortlieb bar bag.
I’ll make a combined response which might be easier for everyone on this thread.
tim-b – thanks, meanwhile I found a different solution, see below.
psmiffy, - I have a Klickfix and that’s what I’ve decided to use now. I was not aware of the bigger mp trap so it’s useful to know for future.
Gattonero – It’s the Garmin (touring)/map combination that I’ll try for my tour for the first time – fingers crossed.
PH – that’s it! I was not aware of the additional adapter for the R&K handlebar adapter which is on my wife’s bike. Just ordered the new, post 2005 handlebar adapter plus accessory adapter and then the wife can do the map reading and me the Garmin.
Quaker Mike – yep, could not use the ‘pre 2005 adapter’ on my wife’s bike, so ordered a new adapter.
rjb and reohn2– I‘ll take some poly bags for the map – and clothes pegs for the clothes.
That would be the final details for my tour to the Tour (de France) in Dusseldorf sorted. Just need to look at ferries now.
Have a good summer cyling everyone.
