Unequivocal chain wear measurement?

a quick follow up to this;

I have been using this chain wear measurement technique regularly for the past few months and so far it seems pretty reliable.

To make it easier to measure narrow chains I did indeed (with a certain amount of trepidation...) take an angle grinder to a brand new set of digital verniers and I made the internal jaws slimmer, over the last ~6mm or so. The verniers didn't distort or anything (so are just as useful for other jobs as they were before) and go into 11s chains without any trouble. Phew....

However one thing I have noticed (looking at various used chain and sprocket sets that pass my way) is that the percentage wear of the chain isn't strictly tied to how worn the sprockets look. I think this is because if the chain is wearing fast enough, the sprockets can't 'keep up' and anyway some folk spin, some folk mash, and the wear is spread differently over a different number of sprockets which are of different sizes. Worst case seems to be a masher who uses few different, mostly small sprockets.
